Today I wanted to give a quick break down of the main differences between B12. There are 4 main types, the two ill be discussing are cyanocobalamin and methylcobalamin; which are the main two people supplement with. B12 has a variety of functions but some of the most important are it plays a crucial role in DNA synthesis, nerve function, and the production of red blood cells.

Vitamin B12 is only naturally found in animal products such as organ meats, oily fish, beef and dairy products. If you do not consume those food groups then you are at risk of deficiency – a Vitamin B12 supplement is therefore recommended for vegans and vegetarians, as well as those who suffer from bowel disorders where absorption may be a problem.

Firstly, the most important piece to understand is all B vitamins are water-soluble, meaning you just get rid of everything you do not need through your urine and sweat glands.

You have probably seen Cyanocobalamin before if you have ever had a B12 injection in your arm and most people pick it up as a prescription from your pharmacy. It is also available over the counter in an oral form which is considered the least available for use by the body because of the chemical reaction that has to take place to make it absorbable by the body.

The key distinction between these two is bioavailability to your body (how readily available is it to be used.) Cyano- is a synthetic form that has to undergo a conversation process which means it not directly available for the body’s use.

However, methylcobalamin is in its natural form and is considered immediately available for essential body functions.

Methylcobalamin is believed to be more effective in supporting nerve health and is a preferred choice for those with specific health concerns or who desire rapid B12 absorption.
